Day 11: Best Seat on the Hillside

[Emily]:

Yesterday we realized that in our haste of rearranging the trip to hike north to south some components of our food for this leg got a bit mixed up...the most interesting of which was lots of coconut powder in lieu of powdered milk. We figured we’d give the coconut powder a shot in our morning muesli...I mean who doesn’t like coconut milk? Lesson learned - don’t ever use coconut powder in place of powdered milk.

A PCT hiker walked past our camp in the morning and we got an update on the snow situation. Apparently he was averaging about 26 miles a day and had previously thru-hiked the PCT and several other long distance trails...and the snow traverses in the southern Marbles which he had just been through was the scariest thing he had ever done. Fortunately he took the time to talk with us about this snowy section, and we learned it was along the PCT after our turn off along the Bigfoot Trail route and thus we would not have to cross it.

Grider Creek was lovely - there was a slight trail reroute in place of one of the footbridges that was burned out. We kept walking up until a saddle on Huckleberry Mountain where we got a view and saw a fire to our west. That was a big surprise though fortunately it looked west of the Klamath River. We could also see fog off the ocean to the southwest, likely the mouth of the Klamath.

We arrived at Buckhorn Spring in the early afternoon - and my oh my what a campsite...

Campsite by a triplet Abies magnifica.

and view...
Pony Fire in the distance.

The Pony Fire had started south of Happy Camp on the west side of the Klamath and the 96 about a day and a half prior by lightning strikes from a system that moved through pretty quickly. We had front row seats on the hillside to see fire-fighting planes soar directly over our heads and eventually drop retardant on the far away hillside. Fortunately this fire did not threaten any local towns and hopefully it burned well.

Total miles: 9
