Day 12: The Heart of the Marbles

[Emily]:

Some days on the trail allow for more introspection (or focusing on slogging through a difficult section) while enjoying the subtle beauty all around. This was not one of those days. Awe inspiring views and terrain with every step made this a very visual day for me. A day filled with glorious walking along contour with many new wildflowers coming out including Polemonium californicum and Myotis scorpioides (which promptly became our favorite plant name to shout out randomly).

We made great time ridge walking to the Bear/Turk Lake junction so we went down to Bear Lake for a swim. We saw our first bands of marble and hit our first snowfields, steep but doable. A lovely thing about being back at higher elevation in early summer...no poison oak and few mosquitos.

We also had our first clear sightings of foxtail pines and whitebark pines!

Tying off the bear bag.

And to top it all off here was our campsite below Black Marble Mountain with a snowmelt stream not 20 feet from our tent!

Yoga is best done with some views...

Total miles: 9 (including detour to Bear Lake)
